Agraphia writing group

Mark will be forming an academic writing group and the first session will be Thursday Feb 6th at 12:30 pm in the NIST cafeteria. The idea is to motivate each other to get done with the writing projects many of us put off for too long.

He previously ran an "Agraphia" (fear of writing) group when he was a PhD student at the Univ. of New Mexico for grad students and post docs and it worked well. The idea is to meet periodically, set do-able goals (often we set goals too high, don't do it, are discouraged, and end up doing even less), and apply a bit of peer pressure to each other. In other words, the goals would be put in writing (uh oh). The idea for the Agraphia group originally came from a book "How to write a lot" by Paul Sylvia.

As a consequence, they have immediate openings in their 3 year-old classrooms and are celebrating their expansion by offering a $500 tuition credit for any enrollment that occurs by the week of February 17, 2014. Their expansion has also led to the shortest waiting lists in years for all their age groups (6 weeks old to 5 years). To encourage NIST parents of all ages to join the NIST CCC community, they are also waiving the application fee for new child care applications received by February 17, 2014. The new GRA board.

Dear Members,

The results of the board elections were as follows

Jack Glover (Chair/President)
David Lechevalier (Secretary)
Philippe Dessauw (Treasurer)
Julien Perugini (IT)
Saya Takeuchi (Active member, happy hours)

Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. We would also like to thank the outgoing chair/president, Eddie McCarthy, for his outstanding work!

We will keep running our popular events and we hope to see you at one!

GRA Election, Thursday 27 June, 2013, 1 pm, Building 101, B113.

As many of you know, I, (Eddie), am leaving NIST at the end of this week, so that you will need to elect a new Chair.

So, there will be an election to fill this position on Thursday June 27, 1 pm in Building 101, Ground Floor, B113.

The elections will follow the existing bylaws, in particular Article 6:

http://www.guestresearcher.org/wiki/index.php/GRA:Bylaws

The requirement to notify nominations in writing is waived on this occasion, as the Chair must be filled by 5 pm on Friday. There is also a provision for self-nomination from the floor, which we will use this time.

So, if you are interested in serving then you can self-nominate on the day, simply by turning up. Voting and membership of the board is possible by all guest researchers, contractors and staff members who are on our email lists and affiliated with us, and the new Chair will be elected by a simple majority vote.

On a personal note, I would like to thank all of you for bestowing on me the honor of serving as your Treasurer and Chair of the GRA over nearly two years.

I would also like to thank my fellow board members for the hard work they have put into this organization over this period, and I urge you all to consider getting involved at some level during your stay here.

All the best

Eddie for the GRA.

Sunday morning, we'll drive to Old Rag Hiking Trail and climb to the top of the mountain and back. We can drive back home Sunday evening.

Please RSVP by May 8th if you are going so we know how many campsites to book!

It should be great fun!

GRA Happy Hour, Saturday April 6th, 7.45 pm, MIGHTY PINT, WASHINGTON DC

Jack recently won a free happy hour at The Mighty Pint bar near Dupont. Free beer and basic mixed drinks between 8pm and 9pm for all GRA!

Jack: I know most of you don't like making the trip into DC, but maybe free drinks will attract a few of you. The bar is 5 minutes walk from the Dupont Metro, so it's easy to get to on the Red Line. Maybe we can organize some car pooling to Shady Grove.

Try to arrive at about 7:45pm so that I can give you the wristband that gets you the free drinks. Remember, the drinks are free!

Spring 2013 - Events

Hello All - This Spring we are planning a Darts Night and a Bowling Night with a Spring Hike on the cards somewhere March to late April.

There may also be a running event this year, so keep your eyes fixed here for further news.

In addition to our official GRA events, there are many events being organized on a daily basis by GR's and others somewhere near you:

You can check these events out on Facebook here.

If you're not yet a member, ask an existing GR to add you, or email us at gra-enquiries@nist.gov.

Remember, you don't have to be a Guest Researcher to join us; we are an open social organization for NIST GR's, contractors, staff and their families and friends.

Looking forward to seeing you at our events this Spring.

Eddie for the GRA.

Happy Hour at Dogfish Head! Friday, Feb 8th

Tax Season 2013 - What Guest Researchers Need To Know

So far this year we have had a number of enquiries about tax returns for 2013. Federal, state and county (local) taxes are all due on Monday April 15 2013 for the tax year 2012-2013.

Firstly, the GRA is not an official tax advisory body, so you should verify all this information yourself before acting on it. The advice offered here is purely informal, but generally accurate.

The official source of information for tax returns is the Inland Revenue Service, (federal), where your tax-payer status and obligations should be clearly specified.

Their home page is here.

Guest Researchers normally fill in the standard non-resident tax form 1040 NR, available at the following link:

However, you will also need to supply a portion of form 1042-S, mailed to you by NIST, as proof of earnings for the previous tax year, which you should attach to 1040NR.

(I have received mine already, so yours should soon be in your mailbox).

If you have other sources of income you will need to download, fill in, and attach other supplementary forms as detailed in 1040 NR; i.e. bank interest, shares, other earnings etc.

Also, GR's who have been here two years or more should study the IRS residency regulations on IRS 1040 NR carefully; this has an effect on the tax calculation you make.

Don't forget; when the federal taxes are paid, you will then have to pay state taxes separately, which are handled by separate offices within each state. These are generally due on the same day, April 15.

Importantly, state taxes in Maryland must be paid either in advance, or during a given tax-year, whereas federal tax may be paid in retrospect for the year just completed.

Please confirm the corresponding regulations for Virginia, or if applicable, the District of Columbia.

Declarations, deductions and exemptions on the federal form generally influence calculations on the state forms, so it's usually good to do the federal forms first.

Generally, you can e-file online or file hard-copies of your returns by post.

If you are unsure about filling in such forms, and would prefer to have them vetted professionally, there are services available for this, but self-submission is not as difficult as you might think.

Lastly, you can download commercial software to auto-fill in the necessary forms, based on information you supply. Again, this depends on the complexity of your tax return.

If you have any further questions on tax, you can post them on our Facebook page here

Also, ask around; your GR friends will know the ropes, or if they don't, they can refer you on to someone who does.

Eddie for the GRA.

(This is also a good time to bid Stefan farewell from NIST and to thank him for his contribution to the GRA over the years)

(While I'm at it I should extend the same thanks and farewell to Kanokwan and thank her officially for her contribution to the GRA)

Their names are being inscribed and the trophy will be returned to Julien in due course.

GRA Forum Rises From The Grave!

Great news guys..our intrepid IT Officer has resurrected the GRA Forum from the grave just in time for Halloween. (Buy Julien a drink next time you see him)

We would like you all to try it out and give us your feedback over the next few days. A permanent link to the forum is available to the left of this news page.

Note, you will have to re-register if you were already registered on the old one, but this is quick and painless just like the kiss of a vampire :)

All types of general topics will be covered, and members will be free to create their own. We hope it will become a one-stop shop for guest researchers, new and old, both for organizing events and sharing knowledge on life at NIST, and in the local area. If you have any difficulties registering you can contact us at gra-admin@nist.gov, or drop a note under this announcement here. Thank you.

GRA Poker Tournament

The GRA Poker Tournament will be held on Friday 2nd November at Hard Times Cafe, Middlebrook Rd., Germantown at 7pm. (Contestants should arrive earlier at 6.30-45) Please enroll and commit as soon as possible to assist our planning for the evening.

The rules of the tournament are available at this link: (Texas Hold'Em) http://www.guestresearcher.org/wiki/index.php/Poker_Tournament_2012

We are now finalizing preparations for the tournament. To mount this effectively we will need experienced players to guide each table and also packs of cards, chips and other necessaries, so let us know if you are a seasoned cardsharp :), or you have sets to loan us.

In particular we are looking for experienced players to come forward in advance and act as table managers to keep games moving and educate more inexperienced players. They will not be referees, but contestants in their own right. All issues above individual table level will be managed by selected board members; this includes adjudication of any disputes :)

Needless to say, there can be no cash involved :), but prizes will be awarded as we have traditionally done in previous years.

So please come forward you cardsharps!

October 16th: Tuesday Happy Hour in Bethesda

Thanks.

One day GRA Hiking Trip, Catoctin Mountain Park, Maryland

A GRA hiking trip will take place on Saturday 29th in Catoctin Mountain Park, (weather permitting :)

Park link here: http://www.nps.gov/cato/planyourvisit/mistymount.htm

For organizing the carpooling, visit this link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ar5bucVlrdGvdEplRW9kVTJLMk9ObDZ2VzBlSnZGMEE#gid=0

Six days left to the hike. Any drivers with spare seats? Please add your names and details to the top half of the spreadsheet, (link immediately above). Please state clearly where / when you are leaving from, available spaces and whether you are returning to Gaithersburg on Saturday or Sunday evening.

Anyone wishing to travel who needs a ride, add your names to the bottom half, and we will make sure you get there.

Drivers are important to this effort so please make yourselves clearly known. We have only two on record up to now, and it's clearly not enough with 23 committed hikers, 10 maybes.

Make sure to bring a small backsack or pouch, with plenty of water, and ideally durable boots / strong shoes with ankle support. Also bring some food and at least one item of warm clothing, one waterproof.

The event will go ahead unless there is a severe weather warning for the area. Light rain will not be an excuse :)

We look forward to seeing you there!

A more detailed schedule for the event follows:

We meet at the park (Visitors center). The people who have booked cabins should maybe arrive earlier to move in....
