Enhance your research team with international science fellows
Established by the French government, the International Science Fellowship enables young men and women to conduct research work abroad under the auspices of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the French Embassy. Fellows must be under 29 years of age, and either French or other nationality within the European Economic area (EEA)
Eligible applicants
Candidates must have been awarded a Master’s Degree or Ph.D or be in their final year before graduating. To register, they should visit www.civiweb.com, the website of the Centre d'Information sur le Volontariat International - CIVI (International Science Fellowship Information Center) before their 28th birthday to be eligible for openings in U.S. institutions which are posted by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Today, more than 4,000 applicants have shown interest in conducting such laboratory research.
Host Institution
The host institution must be a university laboratory, research center, or a public institute. Private institutions are eligible too.
Duration of the mission
The duration is flexible, ranging from six months to two years, renewable once with a two-year limit.
How to recruit a researcher?
There are three possibilities :
- The host institution wishing to recruit a researcher may publish an advertisement on the CIVI website by downloading a form from the French Embassy’s website. The ad would include a summary of the research project proposal and the email address of the US recruitment officer. Download the advertisement publication form from the French Embassy’s website - Science Department (http://www.france-science.org). As soon as the advertisement is published, the Embassy will direct it to the professor’s attention. Applicants' resume should be sent directly to the professor, who will then select the most qualified candidate.
- Depending on his/her specialization and the research interests of the host institution, the candidate may apply on his/her own initiative.
- The host institution may receive a candidate in accordance with the partnership agreements signed between the host institution and French or European universities, research organisation or higher education establishment.
How is the fellow's stay financed?
Financing a fellow’s stay can be accomplished by :
- the host institution
- a French company
- or both (host institution /French company) provided the French authorities deal with only a single paying authority.
Costs to be covered by the financing party:
- The monthly allowance set by the French authorities, depending on the country of assignment.
- Fellow's round-trip travel expenses + cost of baggage up to 150 kg (300 lbs - freight).
- Health Insurance costs will be covered by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs if the candidate is financed by the host institution, otherwise by the French company sponsoring him/her.
