Overview

Before you can register you car in your name you need to have car insurance.

If you have a US drivers license, any insurance company or agent will be more than happy to give you an insurance, but shop around a little because the rates sometimes vary quite a lot.

If you only have an international driver's license it is sometimes a bit harder to get insurance. Most insurance agents can give you insurance but sometimes they don't know it themselves. You can find a list of insurance agents provided by the NIST Office of International Affairs (OIAA) that give insurance to people with only an international driver's license. You are only allowed to drive with your international driver's license for less than a year, so if you're staying longer consider seriously the way to get a driver's license from the states.

If you live in Maryland most insurance agents will probably give you an insurance policy from the Maryland Automobile Insurance Fund (MAIF) if you ask for only liability coverage. This is an insurance policy created by the state of Maryland that only gives the minimal legally required coverage, therefore it is also the cheapest. By the way you don't want to crash into a Lexus, Mercedes or something else that costs a lot of $$ if you have this insurance, because the minimal legally required coverage is not enough to pay for that.

So best way is to consider private company like Geico, Progressiv, or others.
